Walmart, Northside of Lafayette, LA Closing

The Walmart on Evangeline Thruway is closing, a Spokeswoman Anne Hatfield said the store will close March 29 and the pharmacy will close March 15.

“We evaluate each store and it’s an extensive evaluation. The decision to close the store is difficult and is based on many reasons, one of them is the overall store financial performance,” said Hatfield.

There are more than 300 employees at that super center and five other stores within an eight-mile radius. Employees will have the option to transfer to other stores, including Sam’s Club, also owned by Walmart.

“Right now, taking care of our associates is our top priority. We will meet with each one to see what they want to do. And if they want to transfer, we will see about getting them a spot,” said Hatfield.

She said she is confident that the company will have plenty of opportunities for those who would like to transfer, but since it is a process, “it’s not a guarantee.”

“We are deeply invested in Louisiana. We have close to 36,000 employees, 138 stores throughout the state. We spent $410 million with Louisiana suppliers last fiscal year,” she added. “Part of this investment is making sure we can provide the ways customers want to shop, saving time as well as saving money.”
